In particular, the movies in which she paired opposite another legend in Bengali films, Uttam Kumar, are all-time classics in Bengali cinema.She now lives a life of a recluse rarely making any public appearances. When she left movies, she was slowly but steadily losing the position of leading lady of Bengali silver screen.She is the first Indian actress to be awarded in an international film festival (Best Actress award for the movie "Saat Paake Bandha" in 1963 Moscow film festival).Her films with Uttam Kumar are still shown as re-runs on Bengali TV channels such as ETV Bangla, Aakash Bangla,DD7 Bangla and so forth; many of them are available on video CD. Notably, she allegedly refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (the Indian equivalent of a lifetime Oscar) in 2005, preferring to live in seclusion out of the public eye.She was born as Roma Dasgupta in Pabna district in Bangladesh 1931. She married Dibanath Sen, son of a wealthy Bengali industrialist, in 1947 and had one child, Moon Moon Sen, who went on to become an actress. Her daughter Moonmoon Sen also acted in a few films in Hindi and Bengali. Moonmoon Sen's daughters Riya and Raima are also actresses.Her father Karunamoy Dasgupta was the head master of the local school and her mother's name was Indira Dasgupta. She was their fifth child and third daughter. Roma had formal education in Pabna.Suchitra made her debut in films with "Shesh Kothai" in 1952, but the film was unreleased.The following year saw her act opposite Uttam Kumar in "Sharey Chuattor". The film became a box-office hit and it was remembered for launching Uttam-Suchitra as a leading pair. They went on to become the icons for Bengali melodramas for more than 20 years, becoming almost a genre to themselves.I just love to spend time with myself. I never accepted any proposal for acting since I decided to retire. I spend the morning watching the sky, the trees and the flowers in the garden, in the evening I watch the twilight sky, and I like talking to my granddaughters whenever they paid a visit. I had a strong desire to act in the role of Damini in Rabindranath Tagore’s Chaturanga but it never happened. Premendra Mitra was planning a film and I was supposed to play the character. But the producer Hemen Ganguly suddenly committed suicide and the film was never made. I would have even played the role in a theatre had someone came up with a script for a theatrical performance. I’m really fond of this novel. Of all the Tagore novels, I like this one the most. I truly loved acting in Neelachale Mahaprabhu, against Basanta Choudhury. I also liked acting in Harano Sur, Uttar Falguni and Saptapadi, against Uttam Kumar, and Saat Pakey Bandha against Soumitra Chatterjee.Saat Pakey Bandha, besides winning me the best actress award in the Moscow film festival, is memorable for another reason. What you watched in this film was happening to me in real life. I would have a quarrel with my husband everyday during the shooting. One morning I tore apart my husband’s shirt at home. During the shoot in the afternoon, I had a similar scene of the quarrel. I told the director I wanted to tear apart Soumitra Chatterjee’s shirt and he agreed. I paired with Uttam Kumar in so many films, and yet, I told my producers to keep my name ahead of the actor in the advertisements.I had a good friendship with Uttam Kumar, a deep one. Among actors, I respect Dilip Kumar the most.
